Video: 'A summer of change' - a preview of the 1988/89 season

This is a classic retro video. It’s like walking through the corridors of English football 24 years ago. It’s a fantastic little clip which talks through the biggest English transfers of the 1988/89 season. Take a look.

Here are our favourite quotes from the video:

'It’s been a hectic summer, with no less than £34million changing hands.' - this summer, three players moved for £35million pounds.

'There’s been a massive splurge of spending.' - In the 1988/89 season, £34million was spent. Fast forward 24 years, to this season, £485million was spent in the 2011/12 season. (both in England's top league)

'if I can bang the goals in I can prove I'm worth £2million.' That just sounds hilarious now.

Paul Gascoigne - 'Nobody is worth £2million' how times have changed, now £2mill is shrewd business!

Martin Tyler on Gazza's £2mill price tag: ' that doesn’t worry you, that daunting prospect.' [of costing £2million]

’The return of Mark Hughes is a boost to Manchester United's bid for their first title in 22 years. '- 24 years later, United become England’s most successful domestic team.

England's premier division in 1988 is described as 'the best league in the world' – Fast forward to the 21st century, the same thing still happens! The Premier League is still labelled, by Martin Tyler and most of the Premier League pundits as the best league in the world. Some things will never change!
