Game of the Day - Fulham 4 v 0 Tottenham - 30/01

The game of the day, for me was Fulham's hammering of Tottenham. Fulham have had a poor start to the season and have found it difficult to pick up wins. But the return of strikers such as Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele have rejuvenated Fulham's recent form.

Fulham fielded arguably their best 11. Tottenham also fielded a strong side. Earlier in the season, Spurs had beaten Fulham at Craven Cottage in the league. Spurs had also knocked Fulham out of last seasons F.A Cup.

Match Rating 7/10 - Fantastic win for Fulham. In recent games its clear Fulham have shown their true quality. They were unlucky not to get at least a point in their last game against Liverpool. But Fulham showed a strong attacking intent and continuously forced the spurs' defence to make mistakes. One thing I enjoyed about this game was how well Fulham played in contrast to Spurs who didn't show up. This game saw a rarity of two penalty's in 5 minutes! Spurs simply couldn't cope with Fulham's play today. The solo goal of Moussa Dembele emphasised the poor Spurs defending as he was allowed time and space to run from the half way line, unchallenged and calmly fire Fulham's fourth.

Game of the Day - Birmingham 3 v 2 Coventry 29/01

The F.A cup tie between Birmingham and Coventry was a great F.A Cup tie. Birmingham in their last game had to score two goals to secure there place in the Carling Cup final. And today, another come back was needed from Birmingham.

Birmingham rung the changes ahead of this tie. Blues manager Alex McLeish made 9 changes ahead of this tie against local rivals Coventry. Birmingham had to dig deep to get their victory, McLeish will be pleased his team avoided an embarrassing upset.

Match Rating 8/10 - A great come back by Birmingham. At times Birmingham were woeful especially in the first half. Its no surprise that Birmingham were two down by 30 minutes. But Birmingham managed to assert their authority on the game, especially in the second half. When at times, they played Conventry off the park. This game was nearly an upset for Birmingham, but they showed their resilience and managed to progress. A entertaining F.A Cup tie.

Video highlights of Richard Keys apology

Richard keys infamous radio interview, of which he to be honest, dug himself in a bigger hole. And lost even more respect from the world. TalkSport have made a good video highlight montage of the key moments of the interview.

Why Fernando Torres is Replaceable at Liverpool

Fernando Torres has lost the great love and affection the Liverpool fans had towards him. Torres was adored and treated like one of Liverpool’s own. But Torres has deeply offended and hurt the Kop. His decision to hand in a transfer request in January is odd. As optimism and confidence had been re-instilled by new manager Kenny Dalglish. And the iminent arrival of Luis Suarez, shows Torres that Liverpool are trying to sign quality players - something which he consistently demanded Liverpool to do. And to rub more salt into the Liverpool fan’s wounds, Torres wants to leave for Chelsea – one of Liverpool’s arch rivals.

Even the most ardent Liverpool fans would reluctantly admit Fernando Torres was going to leave at the end of the season. After all, Liverpool are not winning trophies, they are not challenging for the League nor are they in the Champions League. Torres left his boyhood club Atlético Madrid to win trophies. Something he still hasn’t been able to achieve whilst at Liverpool.

Most Liverpool fans expected Torres to show more respect towards the club. The fans would expect Torres to not to show a willingness to join their arch rivals. In some respects, Liverpool fans are most deeply offended that Torres has shown a strong interest in joining Chelsea. It’s clear that most fans would most definitely allow Torres leave to a foreign club, rather than their arch rivals in England. It’s a shame Torres doesn’t respect the Club as much as the fans respect and love him.

But Torres is replaceable.

Yes, he is arguably the most complete Liverpool striker they have had for generations. But one thing Liverpool have been blessed with throughout the generations is a prolific goal scorer. During the glory days, Liverpool had the likes of Rodger Hunt, John Toshack, and Kevin Keegan to bang in the goals. Furthermore, before the 1977/76 season Keegan wanted to leave the club. The Liverpool fans were deeply upset in losing a great player. But he was replaced by a certain Kenny Dalglish and the rest is history.

Even during Dalglish’s Liverpool days, the most successful era for Liverpool. The club was still littered with goal scorers. The likes of John Aldridge and of course Ian Rush – the club record goal scorer (346 goals) were all banging in the goals for Liverpool.

Of course some may turn around and say, ‘oh this is when Liverpool were the best team in the land and could attract the best strikers to the club.’ Even through the decline of Liverpool in the nineties Liverpool had prolific goal scorers. Robbie Fowler emerged in 1993 and consistently scored for Liverpool. In fact, he is 5th in the all time Liverpool goal scorers with 183 goals. It shows that even when Liverpool were failing to reach their expectations of winning trophies, they still had a prolific goal scorer.

As Fowler's goal scoring ratio began to decrease, a new prolific Liverpool striker was on the block. Michael Owen. He was taking Liverpool and England by storm. Owen under the Gerrard Houllier’s reign was the indispensable striker for Liverpool. Scoring, a total of 158 goals for Liverpool. I disagree with the stick he gets from the Liverpool fans now days, in my eyes, he doesn’t owe Liverpool anything. He was a brilliant striker who was instrumental for Liverpool’s success during 1996 - 2004. Arguably, the sale of Owen in 2004 stemmed Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005.

The money raised by the Micheal Owen’s sale allowed Liverpool to finance deals for Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso. Who both played crucial roles in Liverpool’s famous European triumph.

But the sale of Owen left Liverpool without a prolific goal scorer. The first three years of Rafa Benitez reign Liverpool tried many strikers. None were of the Liverpool standard of prolific.

Then came record signing Fernando Torres. Yes, he has taken the Premier League by storm and is virtually breaking records every year, but his sale doesn’t mean the end of the world for Liverpool. Well, along as its in the summer and for a good price. But even so selling to Chelsea for a high price as much as it will hurt the fans of who I feel an incredible amount of sympathy for, it will allow Liverpool to re-build the team.

Like the sale of Owen, it will allow Liverpool to buy two or three players of good quality. This will only help Liverpool progress upwards. It will also allow Liverpool to stop being so one dynamic. Since Torres has come to Liverpool because of his brilliant ability, Liverpool’s strategy hinges on whether Torres is on form. Liverpool need to be able to get goals from all around the pitch, the success of Liverpool during the glory days was because they could score from all over the pitch, rather than just depending on one striker.

Its quite sad that the Fernando Torres saga has overshadowed the transfer of Luis Suarez. Liverpool have signed a brilliant striker in Suarez. He is a versatile striker who can play in all the attacking positions competently and can create and finish – as his brilliant goal rate suggests. But it’s unfair to suddenly expect him to replace Torres, give him time to adapt to the Premier League. But either in a supportive role or a front line role Suarez is a great asset. I expect him in time, to be a prolific playmaker for Liverpool. He has all the attributes to be a special player for Liverpool.

If Liverpool do sell Torres, they will most likely be in the market looking for another striker. Someone who can lead the line, with Suarez behind this striker or on the wings causing mayhem.

Fernando Torres must know that he won’t find the same love and affection that the Liverpool fans gave him at any other club. But it’s in Liverpool’s DNA to have a prolific goal scorer. Yes they may not be as prolific as Fernando Torres, but they will consistently score the goals. It may take one summer, or even three summers to find another prolific striker, but believe me Liverpool will find one. It maybe Suarez, or it maybe someone else, but Liverpool are bigger than Fernando Torres. Brian Kettle tweeted, ‘Keegan chose to leave. Souness. Rush. Alonso. Mascherano. Great players, but merely players. We are Liverpool Football Club. It's his loss.’ I couldn't agree anymore.

Liverpool fans, smile, you have Luis Suarez, if this video doesn't make you happy or excited, i'll be upset!

Torres set to Leave Liverpool

Fernando Torres submitted a written transfer request on Friday. But this request was rejected by the club. The club said "Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool. Fernando is under a long-term contract and the Club expects him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement."

A very tidy and authoritative statement by Liverpool, its pleasing to see a club show the world that no player is bigger than the club. But the harsh reality for Liverpool fans is that Torres doesn't want to be at Anfield. He may lose all his respect from the fans for looking to leave now and especially to arch rivals Chelsea, rather than at the end of the season.

But if he does leave, which looks more and more evident as the hours go by, this is the goal I'll remember him by;

Liverpool fans should also be greatful the Luis Suarez deal is set to be completed. A fantastic creative forward is coming to Anfield.

Why Chelsea’s Inconsistent Premier League season will Stem a Good champions League Run

Last season, Chelsea won the title with reasonable comfort. The team hammered their opponents seeing Chelsea score 103 goals. A tidy goal rate one has to say. Chelsea at times were unplayable. But this season, its been a totally different story. Although the team started off where they left of last season with the hammering of both West Brom and Wigan by 6 – 0. Chelsea’s form has stuttered. The Champions went through 6 Premier League matches without winning a game. Chelsea were beaten by the likes of Sunderland at home (actually, they were hammered by Sunderland), and lost away to the likes of Wolves and Birmingham. This poor run by Chelsea allowed Arsenal, Man City and Man United to take extend their leads in the title race, leaving Chelsea far behind.

Chelsea now find themselves, 10 points behind Manchester United. So it’s fair to say, that Chelsea have a minimal chance of winning the title this season. I’m sure Chelsea will be kicking themselves, as they had a 5 point lead at the top at one stage this season. But this poor domestic season could spell success elsewhere.

The one cup Chelsea are craving to win is the European Cup. The players and fans have got so close to putting their hands on the Champions League trophy. In certain respects, the fans and players have been traumatised due to getting so close to winning it but failing on numerous occasions. The final of 2008, which Terry’s unfortunate slip in the shootout, and Anelka’s saved penalty in Moscow saw Chelsea lose the Champions League even though they were in touching distance of the Cup.

The Chelsea’s players and fans have also been traumatised by their Semi Final defeats too. The 2005 Champions League Semi Final’s when Chelsea narrowly lost out to Liverpool with the infamous controversial Luis Garcia goal. Two years later, Chelsea again lost to Liverpool but this time on penalties. However, the most traumatic Chelsea defeat was most probably the semi final against Barcelona in 2009. Chelsea were arguably harshly treated by the referee Tom Henning Øvrebø who turned down 4 feasible penalty calls. And Barcelona later scored the vital away goal in the 93rd minute which ironically, was their first shot on target on the night.

Many of the players, such as John Terry, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Peter Cech have won every cup with Chelsea. Besides the European Cup. This season could possibly be some of these players last chance for European Glory as the average age of the Chelsea team is 31 years old. So the players may have a stronger hunger for the Champions League this season, also the fact the title is out their hands, it gives them more incentive to make their season a success in Europe.

In Carlo Ancelotti Chelsea have a manager with a proven European Cup record. In a five year period with Milan he reached three European Cup finals being triumphant in 2/3 Champions League finals. It’s been widely reported that a driving factor in Roman Abramovich appointing Ancelotti was his European Cup pedigree. This proven record will naturally give Chelsea players and fans belief in Ancelotti’s methods and strategies. The Italian’s calculated tactical strategies suits the European Cup. If Chelsea’s play is analysed it’s apparent that they play in a very measured and controlled manner. Which involves keeping the ball effectively and progressively creating attacks, this strategy is perfect for Europe. And has already gleamed results for him whilst at Milan.

Chelsea’s inconsistent Premier League form will ignite the squad and fans into focusing on the European Cup. If Chelsea are to look back on this season as a success, they must do well in Europe this season. The fans wouldn’t mind seeing their team finishing fourth if it means John Terry lifts the Champions League in May. The one collective craving Chelsea have is the European Cup. The Chelsea players because of their numerous close defeats in Europe need no extra motivation or reminder of the fans desire to see Chelsea lift the Champions League. When Chelsea play to their potential and are fully motivated, they are unplayable.

Game of the Day - Birmingham 3 v 1 West Ham - 26/01

'Game of the Day' is going to be a new feature, where I search high and low across the globe to find the best game which has taken place everyday.

Today's game of the day was Birmingham's second leg carling cup match against West Ham. The Hammers prior to the game were leading 2 -1 on aggregate. But the return leg was at Birmingham's St Andrews so all was to play for.

BBC Match Report
Highlights

Match Rating 7/10 - Very tense game for both teams, lots of clear cut chances, West Ham will be angry they didn't take advantage of their away goal. But Birmingham will be very pleased, as their going to Wembley and a League Cup Final for the first time in 8 years.

Richard Keys Resigns + Interview with Talksport

At 18:55 it was heavily reported that Richard Keys has resigned from his post at Sky Sports. Earlier Richard Keys gave an radio interview with TalkSport. It was interesting to here Richard Keys comments to TalkSport. He is considering resigning from Sky Sports. Its odd Sky Sports refused Keys and Gray to publicly come up at apologize on Sunday. But it seems Keys has spoken for too long and arguably dug himself in a bigger hole..

Why Man United’s Victory against Blackpool wasn’t a ‘defining moment’ of their Season

Firstly, hats off to Manchester United. To come back from two down away from home in the Premier League is a feat which should be met with applause and respect. But let us remind ourselves of who Man United are playing. They are playing Blackpool. Yes, they have had an absolutely fantastic season so far, but they are a team who have only won three times at home. So Man United are pretty much expected to take to all three points seeing as Utd’s form has been very impressive this season. Furthermore, Blackpool aren’t known for being defensively astute. They are third in the most conceded goals this season with 41 goals conceded. So Man United should expect Blackpool to lack discipline and solidarity in defence. Thus meaning Man United should expect to have a number of clear cut chances in the match because of Blackpool’s attacking nature.

Man United should actually see this win as an ‘save the blushes’ victory. If they lost this I’m sure the Man United players, staff and fans would be deeply embarrassed. But praise must go to the United players who showed resilience to come back and take all three points.

But this is no where near a ‘defining moment’ for Man United. It must be considered that Man United have to face; Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Sunderland all away from home. Which clearly are very very tough games. Winning against Chelsea or Arsenal away should be considered a ‘defining moment’ in their title challenge.

Stuart Holden’s ability is Vividly standing out in Bolton’s Midfield

The last few games that I have watched of Bolton, one player consistently stands out to me. Stuart Holden. In Bolton’s system of progressive passing, he consistently looks to get the ball forward and start Bolton’s attacks.

Holden has shown his passing ability. He has the attributes to pass effectively short to begin Bolton’s attacks and he has the ability to pass long from midfield. However, its fair to say his long balls aren’t consistently accurate. Against Chelsea, 3/5 of his long balls were unsuccessful. But overall, 74% of his passes against Chelsea were successful. This is a decent statistic seeing as Chelsea controlled possession. Holden also has the ability to be able to thread through balls in the final third. One thing which continually stands out for me when watching Holden is that he is always looking to pass the ball quickly. This shows he is trying to dictate the tempo of Bolton’s play. But it also shows how Holden has already seen the pass before even playing it, thus allowing his team to attempt to catch their opponents out, by putting Bolton on the front foot.

Stuart Holden’s mobility makes him stand out too. This is because he is a player you will find popping up in all areas of play. This makes Holden so successful, as he gets into different areas and looks to pass the ball, so Bolton can make progress. Furthermore, Holden’s off the ball running makes him a large threat for Bolton. As he looks to make runs from midfield and attempt to get in-between the midfield and defence lines.

As a midfielder, being able to tackle is obviously a big part of the game. Holden’s tackling rate has been a success for Bolton this season. Holden is the Premier League's top tackler with a 102 tackles. This shows he is able to win the ball for his team too and its something which is a great advantage for Bolton. However his tackling success rate against Chelsea was woeful as he lost 83% of his tackles. If Holden's tackling is on form it gives Bolton another dimension as it means Holden can retrive the ball and then look to play the next pass.

The American’s great technical passing ability, along with his brilliant eye for seeing the game makes him stand out. Furthermore, the mobility of Holden allows him to get into dangerous areas through his well timed off the ball runs. But its evident there are aspects of his game which need to be worked on, such as his tackling and long range passing. But I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years he ends up at a bigger club, he has got the ability to succeed at the very top.

Andy Gray Sacked

Today it was confirmed Andy Gray was sacked because of his 'unacceptable and offensive behaviour.' Fair enough really. His comments were as Rio Ferdinand put it 'prehistoric.' But he wont be remembered for his brilliant analysis (as that's questionable its self) but he will remembered for being that former Sky Sports pundit who made hideous sexist remarks towards Sian Massey.

But for me Andy Gray's finest moment in the commentary box was Steven Gerrard's beauty against Olympiakos. Lets hope his replacement is passionate and respectable towards the game.

Why Charlie Adam should see the season through with Blackpool then look to leave the Club

Blackpool have clearly been the surprise package in this season’s Premier League. They have been brilliant with their attacking and counter attacking style and have found themselves beating the likes of Liverpool, Sunderland and Stoke City, all away from home. However, Blackpool’s fantastic season has been arguably centred on the brilliance of their playmaker Charlie Adam. Its fair to say Charlie Adam has been integral in this Blackpool side. His dynamic range of passing gives Blackpool the ability to quickly turn defence into attack. And he has the ability to thread through balls into the final third of the pitch. So its not surprising that more established Premier League clubs are looking to acquire his services. The stats also prove Adam’s importance to the side as he is the joint top assister for Blackpool, with 4 assists.

Adam is the captain of Blackpool too. As captain he has a big responsibility at the club. It also shows how much he is looked up to at Bloomfield road. As Charlie Adam sets the standard for the other Blackpool players with his brilliant ability and work ethic. But the captain handed in his transfer request on Monday (24th Jan.) This request was rejected by Blackpool. As captain, Adam should see the great responsibility and importance he has at Blackpool. As captain he more than any other player should put the team before his own personal feelings or dreams. The whole point of being a captain is to pull the players in one direction and fighting for one goal. But if the captain isn’t committed to the cause in the long run surely this will create issues within the club. As some players may argue Adam wants to leave the club, so he doesn’t deserve to be captain.

Charlie Adam as the captain should also consider Blackpool’s defence of keeping him. As I’ve said previously in this piece, Blackpool are almost centred around Adam. Everything that’s good about Blackpool stems from him. If Adam were to leave the club in this window, it would leave the club on a lurch. As it’s already very hard to find players with quality in the January market especially with the inflated prices. And finding a replacement for someone who’s so creative for a relatively low price is incredibly difficult in January.

The captain should understand the lurch he will leave Blackpool on. This potential move in January could see Blackpool begin to fall down the table and begin to be part of the relegation battle. As there will be a massive void in Blackpool's midfield. Blackpool wont just lose his superb ability, they will also miss his leadership and the inspiration on the pitch.

Adam would leave Blackpool with far greater respect from his players, manager and Blackpool fans if he were to leave at the end of the season. As he would have seen his job through as captain and as an important player for the club. And more importantly he can help Blackpool stay in the Premier League. Leaving in January has the potential of ruining Blackpool’s fine progress in the Premier League. And maybe the fans and players will ruefully look on at Charlie Adam as his desire to leave stemmed Blackpool’s demise of relegation.

In the summer, Adam will have 12 months left on his contract. If the club want to get a decent amount of money for Adam, they will most defiantly sell him in the summer. So Charlie Adam should have no worries on weather Blackpool will be willing to sell at the end of the season. Blackpool will also have time to find a replacement and will be able to raise a tidy amount in the sale of Adam.

Adam argues, that opportunities like the interest of Liverpool may not come around again. But if Liverpool seriously respected the ability of Adam they would be willing to wait. Furthermore, it may suit Liverpool to wait till the end of the season, as they can pay a lower price than what Blackpool are asking for now. The other positive for Adam if he is sold in the summer, is that he will have far more options to choose from as the fee will have most likely have gone down due to him having 12 months left on his contract.

Most importantly, Adam should respect his position at Blackpool. He is the leader, the driving force of the team.. I’m not questioning his desire when he is on the pitch for Blackpool, but him leaving in January will leave Blackpool in an awkward position. They will lose their creativity and dynamic in midfield. Charlie Adam should do what the best captains do, give 100% in every game and then consider leaving in the summer. Then he will leave Blackpool with far more respect.

Why Manchester United’s form deserves Respect and Admiration due to the Premier League’s Inconsistent Climate

The last time Manchester United lost in the league was the 3rd of April against Chelsea at Old Trafford. 6 months later, Manchester United haven’t lost since Chelsea’s victory at Old Trafford. Any football fan will argue that is a fantastic response by Man United. The team have picked themselves up and now find themselves two points clear, with two games in hand. It’s fair to say United are in pole position for this season’s title race. However, even though this season has been so inconsistent, as teams are picking up results and even losing results at places where they shouldn’t be expected to. Man United have managed to maintain their consistency. Man United to deserve some respect and admiration for this fantastic run. In football the hardest thing to achieve is consistency. And United have been achieving that this season. While their title rivals have fallen to the inconsistent climate of the Premier League.

United haven’t been brilliant away from home this season. The team have only won twice in ten games. However, the fact that there actually picking up points even if its one point it means they are progressing. But in any success, especially in football, luck always plays a key role. United have been fortunate, as the likes of Chelsea have been poor away from home, winning only 3 times, while losing 5 times on the road. Whereas Arsenal have lost only twice on the road, but their inconsistent home form has seen them lose 3 games at the Emirates. This has staggered their title chances. This good fortune for Man United has meant every week they are picking points up, whereas, their opponents are having a week where they will pick up no points.

However, United have shown their quality at home. This season has seen the top teams who are normally so difficult to beat at their own grounds have dropped points at home. I’ve spoken about Arsenal, but even the new title challengers Man City have lost twice at home and drawn three times at home. This demonstrates the inconsistency of the Premier League this season. But Man United’s home form has been brilliant. The team have won 11 out of their 12 home games, seeing them score an impressive 37 goals and only conceding 7. A fantastic record. Manchester United’s consistency at home has given them the foundations to build a strong position in the league this season.

The fantastic home record has been due to the team playing well at home. However, it’s fair to argue that at the start of the season United were picking up wins at home, but were hardly convincing. But as the season has progressed United have looked far more convincing at home. This is due to Man United’s efficient use of the ball. The efficiency has stemmed from the strong understanding between players and knowing their roles on the pitch. United at the start of the season looked shaky in defence, but now the understanding between Ferdinand and Vidic has provided a strong platform for United to be comfortable in defence and build their attacks from that.

Furthermore, the understanding between the midfield and attack has been very successful for Man United. As United going forward look far more threatening, as the players know their positions and the runs of their team mates. This has made Manchester United for more dangerous as the team’s understanding has made them far more progressive going forward. This allows United to press and test the oppositions defence. The understanding and efficiency on the ball by the Man United players have also lead to Berbatov having a goal rout this season. As his team mates have shown a greater understanding to where Berbatov wants the ball and how Berbatov wants the ball played. But Berbatov has also changed this season. He has a shown a far greater threat by his runs and getting in-between the defence and exposing the gaps in the oppositions defence.

The worrying aspect for the Premier League is that Manchester United can easily run away with the title this season. Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United sides always perform far better in the second half of the season. It’s already evident in Man United’s display against Birmingham. As United can efficiently pass the ball at pace and have shown fluidity in their attacks. In previous seasons, United in the second half of the season show greater use of the ball, and become far more enforcing to the opposition. But United’s away form must begin to turn the draws into wins. As they still have to play tough games away such as Cheslea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Sunderland. Team’s who will most defiantly fancy their chances against Manchester United. These tough away games will test the credentials of Manchester United’s play, character and ambition.

But Manchester United deserves a degree of admiration to how they have applied themselves this season. The team have shown consistency even though this season the premier league screams out the word ‘inconsistency.’ But United will not end the season unbeaten. They still have tough fixtures and teams who will also be far stronger in the second half of the season. Furthermore United’s are lacking a cutting edge away from home, and are unable to bring the same fluidity from Old Trafford to away grounds.

Premier League Round Up - Including Goal Videos

8 games were played today with 24 goals scored. The Premier League saw two hatricks, one from Berbatov and Van Persie. There were four clean sheets in todays premier league fixtures, comming from Liverpool, Man United, Aston Villa and Fulham. There was only two away wins today with Liverpool picking up three points at Wolves and Sunderland picking up all the points at Blackpool.

Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool all scored 3 or more goals. A very eventfull day. Even the games which ended in draws they all ended with late drama. Arguably West Ham will be dissapointed to lose out on three precious points at Everton and Newcastle will be fustrated in again dropping points late. Why Steven Pienaar is an typical Harry Redknapp signing

Harry Redknapp is known at every club he has been at as a manager who can buy quality players for a relatively cheap price and be able to get the most out of these bargain buys.

Steven Pienaar signed for Tottenham for £2.5 million. An absolute bargain for such an accomplished versatile attacker. Pineaar is naturally an attacking left winger, the position which he was most successful with Everton. But he can also play on the right wing or in central attacking midfield role.

Pienaar is a player who will fit perfectly into the Spurs system. As he has the pace, the ability to run with the ball and a tidy finish. Furthermore, Spurs play a progressive attacking formation. Where off the ball runs are integral. Pineaar has the ability to thread ball’s into his team mates, but also knows how to get into scoring positions.

One thing most people should expect is that Pienaar won’t instantly be a first team starter. The fantastic form of Bale, Van der Vaart and even Lennon will keep Pienaar out of the side. However, coming off the bench the South African will be an impact substitute, due to his creative ability and pace. However, looking at how impressive the bench is already for Spurs, Pienaar gives the whole Spurs squad even more depth.

However, if the likes of Bale, Lennon or even Van der Vaar get injured or lose form. Pienaar can come into the side and bring a substantial contribution. Harry Redknapp is brilliant at finding great players for bargains. The deal for Pienaar is no different. As you can be sure whether coming on from the bench or even starting, Pienaar can add a creative spark whether its by creating or finishing in the final third.

Harry Redknapp doesn’t like being called a ‘wheeler and dealer.’ But he has managed to get Spurs such a fantastic deal. Redknapp in £2.5 million has brought a player who will add even more depth and quality to his fantastic squad. Pienaar’s transfer to Spurs, reminds me of Kranjar’s transfer to Spurs. As Kranjar came for around £2 million and added more depth and more creative spark for Spurs. And even now Spurs fans can expect Kranjar to come on or start, and still add quality to their team.

The typical aspects of Harry Redknapp’s signing of Pienaar is that it’s a deal which is clearly value for money. Pineaar offers so much quality for £2.5 million. Spurs most probably have got the signing of this January transfer window. But, there’s over a week left. Anything can happen in football!

How Darren Bent’s move to AstonVilla is brilliant for Villa but a huge loss for Sunderland

Aston Villa have made a brilliant acquisition. Darren Bent is one of the most consistent strikers in the premier league. The 26 year old has scored 81 premier league goals in 6 years. A fantastic record which many premier league strikers couldn’t match. In fact only Rooney and Drogba have scored more in 6 years. Bent possess’ great pace, movement, and technique which makes allows him to be deadly in front of goal.

The move is great for Villa. It’s simply what they have been crying out for. A consistent finisher. Villa are blessed with creative options. The likes of Young, Downing, Agbonlahor, Albrighton, and Makoun are some of the brilliant players who can supply to Darren Bent. The acquisition of Makoun is prudent as he along with Petrov in the middle can add some creatively from the centre of midfield, while the likes of Downing and Young can cause trouble on the flanks and supply for Bent to finish. Aston Villa’s options are vast. This therefore allows them to be able to play different styles of football. The team can easily play a direct long ball style if needed as Bent has the pace to run off flick on’s and headers from Heskey. And if the team want to play a counter attacking style, Bent can be apart of that too. Along the frightening pace of Young, Downing and Agbonlahor who can facilitate this.

One teams victory is another teams defeat, and Sunderland are the losers in this deal. Yes, they have made £18 million, and could possibly make more. But they have lost a proven goal scorer. Last season Bent in his debut season for Sunderland scored 24 premier league goals, more than Tevez, and more than Defoe and Torres too. Sunderland will argue that they already have three good strikers in Welbeck, Campbell and Gyan. This is very true. But firstly, Welbeck is on loan from Manchester United. His impressive form will have alerted Sir Alex Ferguson. Who’s probably thinking this kid most defiantly has a bright future for Man United. Or if United do look to sell Welbeck, other clubs will be interested too. This will lead to United to most likely raise the asking price for the player. While Gyan has shown some consistency, scoring in important games such as Chelsea away and against Newcastle. Its important to consider, it’s his first season in English football. So it’s hard to tell weather he will be a consistent premier league performer. But Sunderland have clearly taken a risk here, because Gyan in the second half of the season could lose his goal scoring touch. Which happens quite often to premier league centre forwards. Also at his previous club, Rennes, his goal scoring record wasn’t impressive, in two years he scored 14 goals. Sunderland are taking a big risk here.

Sunderland may have £18 million to spend on a striker but more often than not, even £18 million isn’t enough to find a consistent goal scorer who will score at a similar rate to Bent. It will be interesting to see how the Sunderland story folds out, but it’s clearly their loss. Money especially in the premier league doesn’t always help you find a consistent goal scorer.

The fans, the media and former players have criticised Bent for going for the money. That’s fair enough; everyone has a right to their own opinion. But Sunderland are exactly the same. They have sold him because of the money. Im sure if they really wanted to keep Bent they could have. Sunderland could have turned around and said, we will discuss your future in the summer. Or even say, we spent good money on you, we expect more in terms of years of service before we consider selling you after all you have been at the club for only two years. Sunderland probably saw how much Villa was willing to give and thought kerching. While Bent gets all the stick for going for the money, Sunderland did the exact same thing, but they look like the victims in this ‘terrible’ tragedy.

In the long run, this is a brilliant deal for Aston Villa. If Villa can maintain their creative talents their supply along with Bent’s finishing can make Villa a lethal team. But Sunderland, have been left with a massive void. Good luck filling that void.
